Welcome to the Celsius Initiative!
We are a demand driven collaboration hub for efficient, integrated heating and cooling solutions supporting cities in their energy transition to carbon-neutral systems. Focusing on cities’ needs, through the forerunner groups, it connects its members to exchange on climate and environmental policies, foster innovation, leading to solutions that accelerate sustainable development in Europe and across the world.
The initiative also provides continuous knowledge sharing through a monthly newsletter, webinars, participatory workshops and the Celsius Toolbox. The later gathers and shares technical, economic, social and policy expertise.
How can cities establish efficient, future-proof energy systems, that are independent from energy imports? The heating and cooling sector...
The competitiveness of district heating compared to individual heating When is district heating the cheapest source of heating? In Denmark...
At the end of 2021, there was a shocking rise in electricity and gas prices in Estonia. This year, the price of electricity has more than quadrupled, while the price of gas has increased sixfold.
Latest from the Toolbox
The digitalisation process in society means new business models for heat pumps as well as the need for further development of integrated solutions. European Heat Pump Association, EHPA has provided an overview on the subject.
Energy providers and property owners can both benefit from an innovative cooling concept based on the utilization of the flexibility in district heating systems, and in particular by harvesting excess heat from a cooling process. A Berlin demo case is presented from the Flexi-Sync project.
To ensure that cities’ needs and leadership role are taken on board in this pivotal moment for the future of heating and cooling, Celsius Cities, #DHCities, Energy Cities and FEDARENE have come together to endorse the Cities Manifesto for Fossil-Free Heating and Cooling.

Guide to European district heating projects
Get inspired and collect knowledge from innovative new projects financed by the European Commission. More then 60 innovation projects are being highlighted and presented with a focus on the replication potential in cities in this overview.
Give cities a voice in Brussels
No energy transition without sustainable cities; no sustainable cities without sustainable heating and cooling. As the 2016 European Commission’s Heating & Cooling Strategy made clear, district energy systems will have to play a significant role to make Europe’s broader climate and energy ambitions a reality. And cities will be in the driver’s seat to make a successful energy transition happen.
